It is important for people to know the recovery position for in case you might need to save a person. The position is for semi- or unconscious people, however, if you are unsure whether the person has been physically injured you should wait for emergency services. You might cause more damage than good if the person has obtained any injury to his back and/or neck.
The recovery position helps breathing and the flow of blood when the person is not fully or at all conscious. This position ensures that no fluids will be breathed in. This position can be carefully administrated by anyone by reading the following instructions.
First, you will place yourself next to the person, where you will place the closest arm of the person outstretched to his side to form a 90° angle. Next, you will place his other hand, the one that is furthest from you, onto his opposite side’s cheek, the cheek that is closest to you.
Take the knee that is furthest away from you and bend it. After all this is done, you can gently, taking care with the neck and head, roll the person onto his side. You can roll the person over by the knee you have just bent. Just make sure to support the head with your other hand. When the person is on his side you can change the position of the head to enable a clear airway, while the hand is still under the cheek. All you can do now is throw a jacket over the person while you wait for help to arrive.
The position is not unlike sleeping on your side. If you ever need to perform it, you should remember the few easy steps on how to help the person not to breathe any fluids in. Always remember not to do this unless you are sure the person has had no injuries to the back or neck, otherwise it might injure the person further or more seriously.
Chances are you will never need it, but it is always good to know things that might help other people when they are in no position to help themselves. You never know when you will need to know the recovery position.
